Young Extragalactic Radio Sources

Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources and Compact Symmetric Objects (CSO) are selected in very different ways, but have a significant overlap in properties. Ever since their discovery it has been speculated that they are young objects, but only recently, strong evidence has been provided indicating that GPS sources and CSOs are indeed the young counterparts of large, extended sources. They ar...

Extragalactic Sources with Asymmetric Radio Structure II . Further Observations

We present VLA Α-array observations at λ20, 6 and 2 cm and B-array observations at λ20 and 6 cm of the quasar B2 1320 + 299, which has a very unusual radio structure. In addition to a component, A, coincident with the quasar, there are two lobes of radio emission, Β and C, on the same side of A. These are located at distances of 25 and 50 arcsec respectively from A. The present observations sho...

A Study of Frii Radio Galaxies with Z < 0:15 { Ii. High-resolution Maps of Eleven Sources at 3.6 Cm

VLA maps of total intensity and fractional polarization at 3.6 cm are presented for eleven radio galaxies, part of a sample of 29 nearby radio galaxies with P 178 > 1:5 10 25 W Hz ?1 sr ?1. Ten have classical double structure. The hotspots in all of these are well resolved. We have discovered a one-sided jet in 3C 135, as well as imaging the known jets in 3C 98, 111 and 445 at high resolution. ...

High Resolution Observations at 3.6 Cm of Seventeen Fr Ii Radio Galaxies with 0:15 < Z < 0:3

We present high-resolution VLA observations at 8.4 GHz of the seventeen FRII radio galaxies with 0:15 < z < 0:30 and LAS < 190 arcsec from the sample of Laing, Riley & Longair (1983), together with 5-GHz MERLIN observations of one source. Jets have been discovered in 3C20, 4C14.11, 3C 234 and 3C436, and well imaged for the rst time in a number of other objects; the fraction of objects in the sa...

Non–thermal Emission from Extragalactic Radio Sources: a High Resolution – Broad Band Approach

In the framework of the study of extragalactic radio sources, we will focus on the importance of the spatial resolution at different wavelengths, and of the combination of observations at different frequency bands. In particular, a substantial step forward in this field is now provided by the new generation X-ray telescopes which are able to image radio sources in between 0.1–10 keV with a spat...
